The stage of the “military special operation” that started this week is about securing a land route to the Black Sea peninsula of Crimea. The acting commander of the central military district, Rustam Minnekayev, said on Friday the Interfax agency.
So far, no one from the military leadership had commented so specifically on the goals of the war. Minnekayev appeared at a meeting of the Association of Defense Industry Companies. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov declined to comment on a question about the “expansion of the operation”. He referred to the Defense Ministry, which previously said it would focus on eastern Ukraine. There, the Luhansk and Donetsk regions are to be completely wrested from Ukrainian control.
“Control over southern Ukraine, there is still access to Transnistria,” said Minnekayev. Russian troops are stationed in the Transnistria region, which broke away from Moldova. In this way, Ukraine could lose access to the Black Sea in the south and thus to the world’s oceans as a whole. Minnekayev indicated that the interests of the Russian-speaking population should also be defended there.
