Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania’s Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig (SPD) is coming under increasing pressure because of Nord Stream 2.
Federal politicians are demanding clarification about the background to the pipeline construction and the climate foundation MV, which was founded to circumvent US sanctions during construction.
The CDU General Secretary Mario Czaja told the “Tagesspiegel”: “The allegations that the Kremlin in the State Chancellery of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania under Manuela Schwesig pulled the strings almost unhindered are substantiated.” The prime minister veils, maneuvers and puts things into perspective. “It’s unworthy of your office.” The “Welt am Sonntag” quotes Czaja as saying: “It is high time to finally make a clean sweep of the public and also draw personal conclusions.”
Schwesig has been under criticism for weeks because of her pro-Russian actions. The focus is on her support for the construction of the Russian-German Baltic Sea gas pipeline Nord Stream 2 and the establishment of a foundation with the help of which US sanctions were circumvented and the completion of the pipeline was supported. According to documents, Nord Stream 2 AG was directly involved in founding the foundation. Schwesig had refused to resign.
Criticism from the Greens
The Green politician Anton Hofreiter told the “Welt am Sonntag” that there was “strong, legitimate criticism of Ms. Schwesig’s presidency”. Whether this situation must lead to Schwesig’s resignation cannot yet be said with certainty. After Putin’s attack on Ukraine, it was “devastating that the state government became the henchman of Nord Stream 2 and promoted the construction of the Baltic Sea pipeline through this foundation.” The 2015 treaties are particularly problematic. The year before, Russian President Vladimir Putin annexed Crimea.
The leader of the Greens parliamentary group in the Bundestag, Britta Haßelmann, also called for clarification of the allegations of the Kremlin’s alleged influence on Schwesig. “There is nothing to sugarcoat this dubious foundation,” said Hasselmann to the editorial network Germany. “Everything has to be on the table here, and as quickly as possible. By today at the latest, it should be clear to everyone that the decisions on Nord Stream 2 were wrong from a geostrategic and energy policy perspective.”
