On Saturday morning, a boat with migrants on board was in distress near Libya. Volunteers from the “Geo Barents” rescued around 100 people – including children and a pregnant woman.
The organization Doctors Without Borders has rescued around 100 boat migrants in the central Mediterranean.
The voluntary helpers of the “Geo Barents” brought the people on Saturday morning northwest of Libya from the boat in distress, said the private aid organization on Twitter. Among the rescued are four children and a pregnant woman.
On their missions, private sea rescuers keep people from drowning who set out from the coasts of North Africa in the direction of the EU because they are fleeing or hoping for a better life there. According to their own statements, the German sea rescuers from Sea-Eye set off on Friday afternoon with the “Sea-Eye 4” for their second mission of the year to the central Mediterranean.
Many migrants head towards Italy. The Mediterranean country usually lets the sea rescuers dock in its ports with the rescued people on board. In Italian politics, right-wing parties have repeatedly criticized the operations. According to the Ministry of the Interior, almost 8,670 migrants have reached the Italian coasts this year, as many as in the same period last year (around 8,600). According to the UN, 511 migrants have been missing or died in the central Mediterranean in 2022.
