Around 1000 civilians are said to be staying in the besieged Azovstal steelworks. Russia has announced that they should now be able to leave the industrial zone via a corridor. But doubts remain.
Russia has announced a new ceasefire and humanitarian corridor in the face of civilians trapped in a steel mill in the port city of Mariupol.
The Russian army will stop fighting at 2:00 p.m. (1:00 p.m. CEST), the Ministry of Defense announced on Monday in Moscow. The civilians should then be able to leave the industrial zone via a humanitarian corridor. The Ukrainian government had asked Russia to ensure that the women and children escaped from the steelworks’ bunkers.
According to information from Kyiv, around 1,000 civilians are said to be staying in the steelworks. Videos showing children and women have also been published in the past few days. The Ukrainian fighters who have entrenched themselves in the plant are demanding that everything be done to ensure people’s safety.
According to Russian information, around 2,500 Ukrainian fighters and foreign mercenaries are still in the Azovstal steelworks. Russia has asked them to surrender. The Mariupol defenders refused. On Sunday, however, Kyiv offered Moscow negotiations – about an exchange of military personnel.
The Ministry of Defense in Moscow has now announced that the Russian troops are withdrawing to a safe distance and allowing people to flee in a direction of their choice. The government in Kyiv had previously complained that Russia was preventing people from fleeing to territory controlled by Ukraine. The people should therefore be allowed to flee to Russia or to the areas occupied by pro-Russian separatists.
