They are calling for the import of fossil fuels from Russia to be stopped: environmental protection activists have chained themselves to a Russian oil tanker in front of the Norwegian town of Tønsberg.
In protest against the import of oil from Russia, Greenpeace activists in Norway chained their boat to a Russian oil tanker.
They wanted to prevent the ship from bringing thousands of tons of oil to the Norwegian port of Slagentangen, the environmental organization reported on Monday.
The four activists, who held banners reading “Stop fueling the war” and “Oil fuels war” in three small boats and kayaks, called on the Norwegian government to stop imports of fossil fuels from Russia.
Norway acts as a free port
Esso should terminate its contracts with Russia because of the war in Ukraine. “I am shocked that Norway is operating as a free port for Russian oil, which we know is funding Putin’s war,” said Frode Pleym, Greenpeace’s Norway chief. Pleym is among the activists who chained their boat to the anchor of the Russian tanker in front of the Oslofjord terminal. The police had previously prevented three other activists from getting to the tanker.
An Esso spokeswoman told the Norwegian newspaper “Børsen” that the purchase agreement with Russia had been entered into before the invasion of Ukraine. The current sanctions do not affect delivery. Esso Norway has no further sales contracts for products from Russia.
