According to rescue workers, dozens of people have been injured in renewed clashes between Palestinian demonstrators and the Israeli police in Jerusalem. The Palestinian Red Crescent reported 42 injured.
The unrest in Israel does not abate. After riots in Jerusalem, 22 of the 42 injured were taken to a hospital, it said on Friday. Israeli police said “rioters” threw stones and firecrackers in the area around the al-Aqsa Mosque, including at the Western Wall.
Israeli security forces responded with tear gas and rubber bullets, according to eyewitnesses and AFP reporters. After morning prayer the situation calmed down a bit.
Israel: Recently several hundred dead and around a dozen dead
Tensions between Israelis and Palestinians have recently increased significantly. More than 250 Palestinians have been injured in riots on the mosque grounds in the past two weeks. Since the end of March, 14 people have also been killed in several attacks on Israelis. During operations by the Israeli security forces in the occupied West Bank, dozens of people were killed, including several suspected assassins.
It is feared that the tensions could further escalate the Middle East conflict. Last year, unrest in Jerusalem resulted in an 11-day armed conflict between Gaza’s radical Islamist group Hamas and the Israeli army, during which more than 250 people were killed.
