Small CSU party conference: Söder attacks Scholz, Schröder and the traffic light coalition

The Ukraine war and its consequences dominate a party conference of the CSU in Würzburg. The party has clear demands – and Markus Söder launches an all-out attack against the chancellor and the traffic light coalition.

CSU leader Markus Söder has sharply criticized the actions of Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) and the entire traffic light coalition in the Ukraine crisis.

Scholz is clearly avoiding giving the German population orientation in these difficult times, Söder said on Saturday at a small CSU party conference in Würzburg. “Such hesitation, hiding or shirking is unworthy of a German chancellor.”

In particular, Söder criticized the fact that Scholz was “as far away as possible” during the recent Bundestag debate on arms deliveries to Ukraine, on a trip to Japan. But he also attacked the SPD, Greens and FDP in principle, for example because of the long dispute over deliveries. “Germany has been making an embarrassing figure for weeks,” complained Söder. “That doesn’t really do justice to the claim to leadership and the pressure of expectations that Germany has as the largest and strongest nation in Europe.” CSU General Secretary Stephan Mayer said about Scholz that in this situation a captain was needed “and not just a novice sailor”.

Söder criticizes the Greens

Söder accused the Greens of making too big a leap in too short a time. “Yesterday there were Easter marchers, today they are demanding military parades,” he said. The Greens “talk about war with a moral rigor and sometimes even talk themselves into a war”. And the FDP accused Söder of throwing his own earlier announcements overboard in financial policy.

Söder also attacked former Chancellor Gerhard Schröder (SPD): Schröder was “a stubborn, old, bizarre man” for whom his own account was more important than Germany’s reputation in the world. “It’s embarrassing, a shame for our country.” The Bavarian Prime Minister demanded that Schröder not only had to leave the SPD, but also give back his privileges as former chancellor. Schröder has been heavily criticized for his ongoing business ties to Russia despite the war in Ukraine.

Söder demands improvements to the relief package

Söder criticized the previous relief package from the federal government because of the consequences of the Ukraine war as insufficient and demanded improvements. You have to relieve people across the board, and so far the traffic light coalition has not delivered enough. The federal government is making “debts, debts, debts” – and yet the social situation is worsening than most believed. Specifically, Söder called for relief for pensioners and students and medium-sized businesses, among other things. Taxes would have to go down: for fuel, electricity and local groceries.

Above all, the CSU wanted to give a voice to people who were worried about social decline, such as average earners and craftsmen. Alluding to the Greens, Söder issued the motto for his party: “The CSU is not the avocado floor, but the schnitzel floor.”
