Activists from the “Hostels to Housing” initiative have occupied an empty hostel in Berlin. She demands that refugees be accommodated in the building.
Activists occupied an empty hostel in Berlin-Mitte on Saturday. They demanded that the building on Alte Schönhauser Straße be used as self-administered accommodation for refugees.
The state government should expropriate all vacant buildings and make them available to those seeking protection, it said in a statement.
Police confirmed that a small number of people were inside the building. A spokesman said there was also a gathering of a few dozen people in front of the house. The police are on site with about 30 emergency services. The usual procedure is to contact the owner of the building and discuss how to proceed.
Banners with inscriptions such as “Occupied” and “Refugees Welcome” hung on the building. The “Hostels to Housing” initiative said in its statement that the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine was forcing hundreds of thousands to flee – not all of them had Ukrainian passports, but all needed a home. It is unacceptable that vacant premises remain unused.
