The siege of the Azovstal steelworks in Mariupol appears to be ongoing. Explosions could be heard there on Friday and smoke billowed. According to Ukrainian sources, hundreds of militants and some civilians have holed up at the factory site, their last retreat in Mariupol. Russian forces have been besieging the plant for weeks. President Vladimir Putin had declared that the site did not have to be stormed. In the urban area, people try to organize their everyday life. Large parts of Mariupol have been destroyed. Those who have not yet fled often have no choice and have to shift parts of their lives onto the streets. The United Nations had offered to organize an evacuation of civilians from the Azovstal steel mill. Russia initially did not respond to the proposal.
