Attackers shoot dead a security guard at the entrance to an Israeli settlement. Now there are two arrests.
Two Palestinian suspects have been arrested after a deadly attack on an Israeli security guard in the occupied West Bank.
The two murder weapons were also found during the deployment of Israeli security forces on Saturday evening, said the domestic intelligence service Shin Bet. The two men are currently being questioned. According to Israeli media reports, they were arrested in the area of the Palestinian town of Salfit in the northern West Bank.
In the attack on Friday evening, the security guard at a post at the entrance to the Israeli settler town of Ariel was shot dead. According to Israeli media reports, the man used his body to protect his fiancé, who was keeping watch with him at the post.
A Palestinian was later killed in confrontations with Israeli security forces in the town of Asun. The army announced that anti-terrorist activities had taken place in Asun near the Palestinian city of Kalkilia as a result of the attack.
Confrontations on the Temple Mount
The security situation in Israel and the Palestinian territories remains tense after a wave of terror. On Friday – the last Friday of the Muslim month of fasting Ramadan – there were renewed confrontations on the Temple Mount (Al-Haram al-Sharif) in Jerusalem, which is holy to Muslims and Jews. Dozens of Palestinians were injured in clashes with Israeli security forces.
Israel conquered the West Bank and East Jerusalem during the 1967 Six-Day War. Around 600,000 Israelis live there today in more than 200 settlements. The UN Security Council in 2016 labeled these settlements a violation of international law and called on Israel to halt all settlement activity. The Palestinians want to set up their own states in the West Bank, the Gaza Strip and East Jerusalem.
