Former Cuban foreign minister and longtime companion of revolutionary leader Fidel Castro, Ricardo Alarcón, has died in the capital Havana at the age of 84.
Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla and Deputy Foreign Minister Josefina Vidal announced this on Twitter on Sunday. The cause of death was not initially known.
Between 1992 and 1993, Alarcón held the post of Minister of Foreign Affairs. He was considered a close confidante of the revolutionary leader Castro, who died in 2016, and was an early member of the Castro movement «26. July» in the 1950s. He later represented Cuba at the United Nations. In 2013, Alarcón lost his last important political post as a member of socialist Cuba’s powerful Politburo.
