China Expert: Between Russian gas and orders worth billions from the West

The Chinese news agency Xinhua surprisingly published an interview with the Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba over the weekend. Surprising, because Kuleba is allowed to openly criticize Russia in a Chinese state media outlet. What does China want?

“China is trying to find its own role that suits China’s own interests, which unfortunately are not ours. First of all, it is important for China that they have a 4,000 km long border with Russia and are not interested in messing with Russia,” says China expert Frank Sieren in the 265th edition of the podcast “important today”.

China sits between the chairs

At the same time, China also contributes 18 percent to global economic output. So China cannot do without orders worth billions from the West either. In Beijing one sits between the chairs, the leadership there is against the war but also against sanctions, like the majority of countries worldwide.

conflict with Taiwan

The current situation has a direct influence on another political conflict, as Frank Sieren says in an interview with host Michel Abdollahi: “The probability that Beijing will invade Taiwan militarily has fallen again as a result of the Ukraine conflict. The Chinese are much more integrated into the world economy and they have now seen the political price to pay.”

The author and China expert Frank Sieren also speaks of new alliances emerging in the world: “For many centuries it was the case that we, the white male minority in the West, were able to enforce the rules of the world, we were the strongest. This epoch is probably coming to an end forever and a multipolar world order is emerging in which other regions of the world have different ideas.” Sieren speaks here of China and India, among other things.
