Ukraine war: New Zealand extends sanctions against Russia

Further punitive measures against Russia for the invasion of Ukraine. Wellington is determined to “hold Putin and his cadre of warmongers accountable.”

New Zealand widens its sanctions against Russia over the war in Ukraine. The new sanctions target 170 members of the Russian Parliament, the Federation Council and six defense-related companies and organizations.

Foreign Minister Nanaia Mahuta said in Wellington that her country would make those involved in President Vladimir Putin’s “war machine” pay. “We are determined to hold President Putin and his cadre of warmongers accountable.”

The Pacific state had previously imposed sanctions on the largest Russian banks. Further punitive measures are aimed at Putin himself, members of his government and oligarchs. Import duties of 35 percent were also imposed on all Russian imports.
