With their new album “Zeit”, Rammstein are once again causing a lot of discussion. From hymns of praise to panning, everything is included – and the fans sometimes react with violent comments. But what is the Rammstein phenomenon? With a fan and a critic, we get to the bottom of it.
The Rammstein tours are the world’s most successful stage events by a German-singing music group. But they are not only known for their pyro shows at the concerts, but also for provocative music videos and their love for Russia.
Journalist Phil Göbel explains the Rammstein phenomenon in the 266th episode of the “Today Important” podcast: “It’s true that Rammstein has been very polarizing since the mid-90s and, with its aesthetics, which comes across as very martial and military, people in fascinated in a way that hardly any other band can.”
Associations with the NS regime
The journalist Jonah Lemm has also dealt with the band and sees many things rather critically: “I believe Rammstein that they are not a right-wing band and that all members want to distance themselves from the right. What my problem with this band is that it has always been there flirting with Nazi aesthetics. The rolled “R” where you inevitably have to think of Hitler, no matter what Rammstein fans tell me.”

Rammstein and Russia
Traditionally, Rammstein have many Russian fans, Phil Göbel explains it like this: “Of course, this band has an extremely large fan base in Russia, both from fans close to the Kremlin and from fans critical of the government.
There are several reasons for this, on the one hand that the market for hard rock music is much larger in Russia and on the other hand it is due to this military, martial aesthetic, which is interpreted very differently in Russia than here in Germany, where Nazi comparisons are quickly made .” However, Rammstein is also criticized and despised in Russia, for example after the guitarists kissed on stage at Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium.
