First a car bomb goes off, then heavily armed fighters storm the African Union base in Mogadishu. There are serious clashes with dead and injured.
The Islamist terrorist group Al-Shabaab has attacked a military base of the African Union (AU) peacekeeping mission and says it has killed dozens of Burundian soldiers stationed there.
A suicide bomber blew up the entrance to the military base in the village of Elbaraf in Middle Shabelle province with a car bomb, a senior Somali military official, Mubarak Mohamed, confirmed to the German Press Agency. Heavily armed fighters then stormed the base. There were serious arguments. A number of victims is not yet known, said Mohamed.
Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack via radio station Andalus. The country on the Horn of Africa with around 16 million inhabitants has been shaken by attacks by the terrorist group for years. Al-Shabaab controls large parts of the south and central regions. The terrorist group repeatedly carries out attacks on security forces and civilians. The AU has around 22,000 troops from Burundi, Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia and Djibouti stationed in Somalia.
