After a meeting of EU energy ministers in Brussels, Federal Economics Minister Robert Habeck described an oil embargo against Russia as “very likely”. On Tuesday, the EU Commission will present proposals for a sixth package of sanctions, Habeck said on Monday evening on ARD. There will certainly be some oil in there, the minister explained. He is confident that it will be possible “to persuade even recalcitrant states to agree”. An embargo would lead to a rise in global oil prices, Habeck said. You have to be very careful that Russian President Vladimir Putin doesn’t “have more income with fewer imports”. According to insiders, Europe could decide on an oil embargo against Russia with exceptions for Hungary and Slovakia. Both countries are even more dependent than Germany on Russian oil. On Monday it was initially considered certain that a boycott would not be decided immediately, but with a transitional period.
