Military expert Carlo Masala has defended Ukrainian attacks on targets in Russia. Masala said on Tuesday im star-Podcast “Ukraine – the situation”, the attacks were aimed at refineries and other facilities in support of the Russian offensive. The attacks are those “only possibility to hinder the supply of the Russian armed forces in Ukraine”. He thinks they are completely legitimate.
Carlo Masala gives little hope that the war will end soon
The politics professor at the Bundeswehr University in Munich does not expect the Ukrainians to attack targets that are not directly connected to the war in their country. He does not expect the war to escalate because of the Ukrainian approach – although risks remain. “I see the problem of escalation”said Masala. “But there is also a lot of scaremongering over the question of whether Putin is now resorting to chemical weapons or nuclear weapons.”

dr Carlo Masala is Professor of International Politics at the Bundeswehr University in Munich.
Masala accused Russia of playing on Western societies’ fears of a nuclear escalation. “The constant emphasis on the Third World War narrative” he sees this as a trigger for the declining approval of the population for the delivery of heavy weapons. He expressly welcomed the fact that the federal government is now communicating more extensively and actively than before. This is necessary in view of the fears and worries.
Masala gave little hope for a quick end to the war. “It’s a war of trenches, it’s a war of attrition”he said.
