Refugees: Erdogan wants to persuade a million Syrians to return

3.7 million refugees from Syria live in Turkey. As the economic crisis worsened, sentiment towards these people has also intensified. Now the Turkish President Erdogan is reacting.

Against the background of an increasingly hostile mood against refugees in Turkey, the government wants to expand the return program for Syrians.

Preparations are underway to allow one million refugees to return voluntarily, said President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The focus is particularly on regions in northern Syria. Ankara occupies border areas in northern Syria. 500,000 Syrians have already returned, Erdogan said.

In Turkey, as the economic crisis worsened, sentiment towards Syrian foreigners in particular has also intensified. Last year, there were violent attacks on Syrians, their homes and businesses in the capital Ankara.

Leading politicians from the largest opposition party, the CHP, are campaigning for votes by announcing that if they win the elections, all Syrians will be sent back to Syria. According to figures from the Interior Ministry in February, 3.7 million refugees from the neighboring country live in Turkey.
