Trip to Ukraine: Ambassador Melnyk: Scholz plays “offended liver sausage”

Because Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier was discharged from Kyiv, Chancellor Olaf Scholz does not want to travel to Ukraine either. Ambassador Andriy Melnyk finds clear words on this.

The Ukrainian Ambassador Andriy Melnyk has sharply criticized Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s provisional no to a trip to Kyiv.

“Playing an offended liverwurst doesn’t sound very statesmanlike,” says Melnyk of the German Press Agency. “It’s about the most brutal war of annihilation since the Nazi attack on Ukraine, it’s not a kindergarten.”

The Scholz interview on ZDF

Scholz had said on ZDF on Monday evening that Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier’s unloading through Ukraine would stand in the way of his trip. Steinmeier actually wanted to go to Kyiv with the heads of state of Poland, Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania in mid-April, but was rejected at short notice. Scholz said on ZDF: “It cannot work that a country that provides so much military aid, so much financial aid that is needed when it comes to the security guarantees that are needed for Ukraine in the future It is important that you then say that the President cannot come.”

Melnyk said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy would still be happy to receive Scholz in Kyiv. But he added: “What Ukraine would look forward to much more than any symbolic visits is that the traffic light government will implement the Bundestag’s request for the delivery of heavy weapons quickly and fulfill the promises made so far.” He criticized that no ammunition had yet been found for the promised Gepard anti-aircraft tanks. The tanks are the first heavy weapons to be delivered directly from Germany to Ukraine.

Kubicki: “Scholz is not a sausage”

Bundestag Vice President Wolfgang Kubicki has criticized Melnyk for his attack on Chancellor Olaf Scholz. “Olaf Scholz is not a sausage, he is the Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany,” said the deputy FDP chairman of the German Press Agency in Berlin and demanded: “This must be respected.”

Strack-Zimmermann demands an apology from Melnyk

The FDP politician Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann asked the Ukrainian ambassador Andriy Melnyk to apologize to the Federal President. The Ukraine had uninvited Frank-Walter Steinmeier and now cannot expect Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) to travel to Kyiv, the chair of the defense committee told the newspapers of the Funke media group. “Perhaps, dear Herr Melnyk, we will apologize
just go to the president and then invite the chancellor
to come politely.”

AfD faction leaders Tino Chrupalla called for consequences after Melnyk’s statements. First the President of Ukraine invited the Federal President, now the Ambassador insults the Chancellor, Chrupalla complained. “Such provocations and insults by constitutional bodies cannot be accepted without doing anything. The federal government must summon Ambassador Melnyk immediately,” he told the dpa. If Melnyk shows no understanding, the government must insist that he be recalled immediately.
