Amnesty presents report on Russian war crimes near Kyiv

It is well known that the Russian army kills and rapes civilians in Ukraine. Now Amnesty International has presented a war crimes report in which witnesses describe the atrocities.

The human rights organization Amnesty International has presented a report on Russian war crimes near the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv. “In a rare, if not historic, move, Amnesty International denounced Russia’s unlawful use of force as a violation of the UN Charter and as an act of aggression,” said the organization’s secretary-general, Agnes Callamard, at the presentation in Kyiv on Friday. Amnesty documented more than 40 civilians killed in airstrikes in Borodyanka and 22 cases of unlawful killings in and around Bucha.

“Knowing that the crimes are not just random”

“We know that the crimes against people living in the Kyiv area are not just anecdotal, accidental or unintentional,” Callamard said. Rather, they were conscious decisions. The crimes committed are unacceptable and subject to no logic. According to the report, a witness in the village of Sdyzhivka commented on the reasons for the behavior of the Russian soldiers: “You probably thought that you would be warmly welcomed here, but that was not the case.”

Russia attacked Ukraine almost two and a half months ago. Areas north and northwest of Kyiv were occupied by the Russians for almost a month. According to Ukrainian sources, more than 1,200 civilians have been killed in the Kyiv region, about a third of them in Bucha alone.
