Vladimir Putin’s alleged yacht “Scheherazade” confiscated in Italy

The tug of war is over for now. The Italian financial police have detained the super yacht “Scheherazade”. It presumably belongs to none other than Vladimir Putin.

The Italian financial police, Guardi di Finanaza, seized the $700 million yacht Scheherazade on Friday evening. The 140 meter long ship is attributed to the possession of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Does “Scheherazade” belong to Vladimir Putin?

A statement by the Italian Ministry of Finance, citing investigations by the authorities, states that the owner of the “Scheherazade” has “significant economic and business connections” with “prominent representatives of the Russian government” – Vladimir Putin is not named in the statement. The Guardia di Finanza may be referring to the oligarch Eduard Yuryevich Khudainatov, who is said to be acting as a dummy owner for the Russian president. Khudainatov is not yet on the European Union’s list of sanctions. (Read here what suggests that the ship actually belongs to Vladimir Putin.)

The ship is “frozen” by order of Finance Minister Daniele Franco until the EU decides on how to deal with the owner.

The “Scheherazade” has been in the port of Carrara on the Ligurian Sea for weeks. According to the latest reports in the “New York Times”, the crew was preparing to leave the ship – Russian opposition groups then accused the Italian authorities of inaction (the star reported). Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had also called for the mega yacht to be confiscated.

The ship was built in 2020 in a shipyard of the German Lürssen Group on the Kiel Canal. Its value is estimated at 700 million US dollars, the equivalent of around 660 million euros. The yacht sails under the flag of the Cayman Islands.
