Christian Lindner does not expect the chancellor to visit Kyiv quickly

Ukrainian President Selenskyj has invited Chancellor Scholz to Kyiv on May 9th. However, Christian Lindner does not expect the Chancellor to visit quickly.

After the invitation from Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) to Kyiv, Federal Finance Minister Christian Lindner does not expect a quick visit. He has the greatest respect for such a spontaneous invitation, said the head of the FDP to the German Press Agency on Saturday at the sidelines of an election campaign event in Kiel. Such a visit requires preparation.

Christian Lindner: “The chancellor decides that himself”

He suspects that the security authorities will not be able to do this in the short term. On the question of whether Scholz should generally travel to Ukraine, Lindner said: “The Chancellor decides that himself. I know that he always carefully weighs his decisions from different perspectives.”

The Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj had invited the Federal Chancellor to Kyiv on May 9th. With this, Scholz could take a “very strong political step”, Selenskyj said on Friday at an event of the London think tank Chatham House. On the same day, Russia wants to celebrate “Victory Day” with a military parade, which traditionally commemorates the victory of the Soviet army over Nazi Germany in World War II.

The federal government announced on Thursday that Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Greens) would first travel to Kyiv. In addition, Bundestag President Bärbel Bas (SPD) will visit the country on Sunday. Relations between Kyiv and Berlin had been tense for weeks because a visit by Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier to Kyiv was undesirable. Steinmeier and Selenskyj cleared up these irritations in a telephone call on Thursday.
