They are in Kyiv and therefore safer than before. But they are waiting for the rest of their family. Because the two Ukrainian sisters, Nicole and Vira, had fled the besieged city in a hurry. Vira together with her 4 year old son. Their journey was life-threatening. But worst of all, they had to leave their mother behind when they rushed out of town on April 1st. The Russian attack had begun weeks earlier. 21-year-old Nicole recalls: NICOLE, 21 YEARS OLD: “The last time I saw my mother, it felt like a normal visit, albeit under rather unusual circumstances. But I never imagined that I would see her like this I won’t be able to call her for a long time to see how she’s doing, what’s going on with her, or just to say hello.” In mid-April, the two sisters received a call from an unknown number. It was her mother. They could talk briefly. But since then there has been radio silence. The news from Mariupol is sounding more and more dramatic and worries are growing: NICOLE, 21 YEARS OLD: “I really want her to make it out. But not like it was with us. We got out by a miracle. It was an escape on Edge of life and death. Our mother couldn’t have walked all over town with us like that. Just hoping to survive, get freedom back and live in peace again. But for that we had to leave our relatives behind. Now there is a chance of evacuation. And we hope that eventually she’ll pack her bags and go with us and then somehow she’ll come and meet us.” Because hope dies last. Estimates assume that around 100,000 residents are still holding out in the port city, which is largely occupied by Russian forces. Around 400,000 lived there before. According to the UN refugee agency, around 300 civilians were evacuated from Mariupol and other areas of southern Ukraine on Wednesday. The Russian war of aggression began at the end of February. And Mariupol is considered a strategically important city. However, for the most part, information from the contested region cannot be independently verified.
