The end of the war 77 years ago is remembered in Berlin. When the Ukrainian ambassador lays a wreath at the Soviet memorial, he finds himself chanting.
Ukrainian Ambassador Andriy Melnyk laid a wreath at the Soviet War Memorial in Berlin’s Tiergarten on Sunday in memory of the Ukrainian soldiers who died in World War II.
Several hundred people also came to the memorial. Some of them chanted “Melnyk out” at the ambassador’s wreath-laying ceremony. Other participants then began chanting in Ukrainian. Many wore blue and yellow garments – the national colors of Ukraine.
According to a dpa reporter, a man distributed Ukrainian paper flags, which the police quickly collected. The man was therefore led away from the event by the officials. A police spokesman did not provide any information on request.
On the occasion of the commemoration of the end of the World War in Europe 77 years ago, the police issued conditions for 15 memorial sites on Sunday and Monday in Berlin, including a ban on Russian and Ukrainian flags. Diplomats and veterans of the World War were exempt from the ban.
