What’s next for the Climate Foundation? This question is still undecided. The board makes a new proposal – but the opposition opposes it.
The Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Climate Foundation wants to remove all references to Nord Stream 2 from its statutes. The board of directors Erwin Sellering said on Sunday at the request of the German Press Agency.
“We want to make it clear that the foundation no longer has anything to do with Nord Stream 2.” The “Welt am Sonntag” had previously reported. The foundation supervisory authority must therefore still approve the amendment to the statutes.
The Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Climate Foundation was founded in early 2021 following a state parliament resolution. She was controversial from the start. One goal of the foundation is to spread the idea of climate protection. At the same time, however, the foundation should also support the completion of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline for Russian natural gas. The reason was US sanction threats against companies involved in the construction – the foundation was supposed to act as a kind of protective shield. The line has been completed – with the support of the foundation. However, due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, it has not received an operating permit from the German authorities.
CDU continues to demand dissolution of the foundation
Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig (SPD) has been criticized for sticking to Nord Stream 2 for a long time. There are allegations that Russian forces have pulled the strings in important areas of the foundation. Schwesig played a key role in setting up the foundation in 2021. Today the state government is pushing for a dissolution, which the board of directors Sellering believes is not legally possible. There are two opposing legal opinions.
The opposition CDU in the Schwerin state parliament rejects the foundation’s request. The state parliament and state government had clearly expressed their political will that the foundation should be dissolved, said the chairman of the CDU parliamentary group, Franz-Robert Liskow. The state government has an expert opinion, according to which they not only have the right to dissolve the foundation, but the obligation to do so. “If Mr. Sellering does not cooperate, Ms. Schwesig must recall him. There are now plenty of important reasons,” said Liskow.
