Incident in North Rhine-Westphalia: Eggs thrown at Foreign Minister Baerbock during an election campaign

Police say the egg missed its target. After the incident, Baerbock continues to campaign for the NRW Greens – but allows himself a tip against the egg thrower.

During an election campaign for the Greens in North Rhine-Westphalia, a raw egg was thrown at Federal Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock.

At the event on Sunday afternoon in Wuppertal, the egg missed its target, said a police spokesman. The personal details of the egg thrower were recorded and a criminal complaint was issued. “Spiegel” and the WDR had previously reported.

After the eggs were thrown, security officials ran onto the stage to shield the minister. The politician then continued her performance and accused the thrower of taking a dubious path with the right to freedom of expression.

Whistle concert for Habeck

The federal government has been criticized in circles of peace activists and also in other parts of the population because it supports the delivery of heavy weapons from Germany to Ukraine. The Greens were against arms deliveries for decades. Russia’s war of aggression, which violates international law, has led to a rethink among leading Green Party representatives.

At the end of April, Federal Minister of Economics Robert Habeck (Greens) had to endure a whistling concert during an election campaign appearance in Bielefeld. A new state parliament will be elected in North Rhine-Westphalia next Sunday (May 15).
