The CDU celebrates a “fantastic result” in Schleswig-Holstein – and has to fend off the question of a chancellor candidate Günther. The SPD asserts confidence in the upcoming elections in North Rhine-Westphalia.
After the clear victory of the CDU in the state elections in Schleswig-Holstein, the Christian Democrats are also hoping for an election success next Sunday in North Rhine-Westphalia.
The CDU in the north has achieved a “fantastic result”, said General Secretary Mario Czaja on Deutschlandfunk. The aim is also to achieve this in North Rhine-Westphalia.
As expected, the SPD sees things differently. In the north, Prime Minister Daniel Günther of the CDU, as Germany’s most popular Prime Minister, had a lot of tailwind, said SPD leader Lars Klingbeil in the ARD “Morgenmagazin”. In the final phase of the election campaign, there was also the question of who should be the coalition partner of the CDU. That brought many voters from the SPD to the Greens.
Klingbeil: Kuchaty has “direct access to the Chancellor”
“And now comes North Rhine-Westphalia. The starting position is completely different,” emphasized Klingbeil. The Prime Minister there, Hendrik Wüst (CDU), has very different popularity ratings than Günther, said the SPD leader, referring to polls that show a neck-and-neck race between the CDU and SPD.
Klingbeil named his connection to the federal government as an advantage for the SPD’s top candidate Thomas Kutschaty: “Thomas Kutschaty has what Mr. Wüst does not have: direct access to the chancellor, to the chancellery, to the government. And that will help North Rhine-Westphalia a lot.”
State elections will take place on May 16 in the most populous federal state. In polls, the CDU and SPD are in a close race here.
Can Günther be chancellor candidate?
CDU General Secretary Czaja praised the “connecting nature” of Schleswig-Holstein’s Prime Minister Günther on Deutschlandfunk and in the ARD “Morgenmagazin”. Here he has a lot in common with the CDU federal chairman Friedrich Merz, said Czaja with reference to the Ukraine policy.
With whom the CDU will govern in the north in the future, Günther will determine the situation in Schleswig-Holstein. Discussions with the Greens and FDP would have the advantage, but there are other options. So far, the CDU has led a Jamaica alliance with the Greens and FDP, but after Sunday’s election it would also be enough for a two-party alliance.
When asked whether Günther could also become a candidate for chancellor, Czaja said that the question does not arise at the moment. The CDU has good women and men. Günther had asked for trust in Schleswig-Holstein.
