“Victory Day” in Russia: Putin honors military action in Ukraine

Soldiers were fighting in Ukraine for Russia’s security, Putin claims in his speech marking the anniversary of the victory over Nazi Germany. Ukraine has armed itself with NATO weapons.

Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin praised the deployment of the Russian armed forces in Ukraine at the military parade in Moscow.

Soldiers were fighting for Russia’s security in Donbass in eastern Ukraine, Putin said in Moscow’s Red Square. Ukraine has armed itself with NATO weapons and thus posed a threat to the country.

Russia celebrated the 77th anniversary of the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany in World War II. The holy holiday for Russia was overshadowed by Putin’s war of aggression against Ukraine. The Kremlin does not speak of war, but of a “special military operation”.

This time, no foreign heads of state will be guests at the parade. The inner city, secured by a large contingent of uniformed men, resembled a fortress.

Tanks roll across Red Square

Twenty-eight parades were planned across the country, with by far the largest being in the capital, Moscow. During the parade, tanks and other combat technology as well as rockets that can be equipped with nuclear warheads roll across Red Square and through the metropolis.

A planned air show was canceled at short notice due to the weather. Eight fighter jets should form the letter “Z” in the sky, which is the official symbol of Russia’s military operation in Ukraine. Soldiers involved in the war of aggression congratulated “Victory Day” in a video released by the Ministry of Defense in the morning.
