Annalena Baerbock threw an egg at her campaign appearance in Wuppertal

Incident at an election event of the Greens in North Rhine-Westphalia: Shortly after Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock entered the stage, she was attacked by an egg thrower.

Federal Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock had a raw egg thrown at her during an election campaign for the Greens in North Rhine-Westphalia. At the event on Sunday afternoon in Wuppertal, the egg missed its target, a police spokesman said on Monday morning. The personal details of the egg thrower were recorded and she received a criminal complaint.

Security officials stormed the stage after the egg toss and shielded the baerbock with riot shields, reports. However, Baerbock instructed her personal security to step aside and continue her performance. The minister stressed that she did not want to be intimidated. She accused the egg thrower and her sympathizers of setting a fatal example. Throwing eggs or stones at those who think differently is a dubious way of exercising the right to freedom of expression.

Apparently unimpressed by the incident, according to the station, Baerbock mingled with the audience after her speech and let them take selfies with their cell phones.

The federal government has been criticized in circles of peace activists and also in other parts of the population because it advocates the delivery of heavy weapons from Germany to Kyiv during the Ukraine war. The Greens were against arms deliveries for decades. Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, which violates international law, has led to a rethink among leading representatives of the party.

At the end of April, demonstrators from the so-called “lateral thinkers” milieu had disrupted two election campaign appearances by Federal Minister of Economics Robert Habeck (Greens) in Bielefeld in North Rhine-Westphalia with a whistling concert.

A new state parliament will be elected in North Rhine-Westphalia next Sunday, May 15th.
