Measure of the Biden government: USA: Low-income people should get free internet

According to the White House, fast Internet is no longer a luxury, but a necessity.

President Joe Biden’s administration wants millions of low-income American households to have free, high-speed Internet access.

According to the White House, fast Internet is no longer a luxury, but a necessity. The basis is an already running state program for affordable Internet connections (Affordable Connectivity Program/ACP), which subsidizes the network connection for low-income households with up to 30 dollars (28.46 euros) per month.

According to the government, it has now received commitments from 20 leading Internet providers to offer households in the ACP program fast network connections within this cost framework.

Biden wants to lower the cost of living

A government official said lowering the cost of living is a top priority for Biden. The President will announce the commitments of the Internet providers on Monday. The 20 providers would cover 80 percent of the US population. Provider pledges would allow tens of millions of homes to get high-speed internet for free.

The US is suffering from a high rate of inflation, which is putting increasing pressure on the Biden administration ahead of the November congressional elections.
