Russia’s military parade: Putin’s propaganda celebration of victory over Nazi Germany

A Russian war of aggression has been raging in Ukraine for 75 days. Ukrainian troops struggle to end the invasion, Russian troops to victory. At the same time, Russia is celebrating the 77th anniversary of the victory against Nazi Germany. Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin took this as an opportunity to pay tribute to the deployment of his soldiers in Ukraine.

The soldiers fought for Russia’s security in Donbass in eastern Ukraine. Putin again stressed that the invasion was necessary because Ukraine, thanks to NATO’s armament, poses a threat to Russia. To this day, however, Moscow has not spoken of a war. The war of aggression against Ukraine is described as a military “special operation”.

Putin compares World War II to Ukraine war

In recent weeks, the Russian leadership has repeatedly drawn parallels between the Second World War and the military operation in Ukraine, which Moscow officially justifies with the intention of “demilitarizing” and “denazifying” the neighboring country.

At the same time, Putin warns of the danger of a new world war. Everything must be done to prevent “the horror of a global war from repeating itself,” says Putin.

On May 9, Russia traditionally celebrates the anniversary of the victory over Nazi Germany – now the event is celebrating its 77th anniversary. Unlike usual, however, no foreign heads of state are guests.
