Russian forces and pro-Russian separatists resumed heavy shelling at the Azovstal steel plant in Mariupol on Sunday. On Saturday, the Kremlin in Moscow announced the completion of an operation to evacuate civilians from the complex. However, some Ukrainian militants are still holed up inside the massive Soviet-era steelworks in an act of last-ditch resistance to Russian forces in the city. Russia had already announced on April 21 that the army had brought Mariupol under Moscow’s control after a siege of almost two months. Over the weekend, the leadership of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic released photos of Russian Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin during a visit to Mariupol. Ukraine says the number of civilians killed cannot be accurately quantified, but estimates the death toll in Mariupol at at least 20,000. The city of Mariupol is considered strategically extremely important for Moscow. Russia is likely to seek to create a link between the Crimean peninsula, annexed in 2014, and the eastern regions of Luhansk and Donetsk controlled by pro-Russian separatists.
