Incident when commemorating World War II soldiers: In Warsaw, the Russian ambassador was attacked with a red liquid.
In Poland, protesters sprayed red liquid on Russia’s ambassadors and prevented them from laying flowers in a cemetery for Soviet soldiers. When the delegation led by Russian ambassador Sergey Andreyev appeared at Warsaw’s mausoleum cemetery, numerous Ukrainian and Polish demonstrators greeted them with shouts of “murderers” and “fascists,” the PAP news agency reported. Andreev was therefore doused with a red substance.
Andreyev wiped his face and said, “I’m proud of my country and my president,” a photographer told the AFP news agency. Andreyev told Russia’s Ria Novosti news agency that he was not injured. The liquid was “a kind of syrup”. The ambassador and the delegation returned to their official cars.
Russia condemned the incident. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told Telegram: “Admirers of neo-Nazism have once again shown their faces.” It repeated the Russian claim that the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine was a fight against neo-Nazis. “But as I said before, let’s not be intimidated. It must be horrible for the people of Europe to look at themselves in the mirror.” According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, the Polish authorities complained about their “tolerance of young neo-Nazis” and called on Poland “to organize a wreath-laying ceremony immediately and to guarantee absolute security against any provocation”.
Poland has taken in millions of refugees from Ukraine
On May 9th, Russia commemorates Victory Day over Nazi Germany. The Mausoleum Cemetery in Warsaw was laid out a few years after the end of World War II and has the character of a large park. The remains of more than 20,000 soldiers who fell in 1944 and 1945 are buried there.
Poland has taken in more than 3.2 million refugees from its eastern neighbor since Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine began on February 24.
