Since the beginning of April, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has been unable to save himself from visiting appointments. Starting with Austria’s Chancellor Karl Nehammer and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, there is now at least one head of state a week in Kyiv. There are also numerous delegations of ministers and members of parliament from all over Europe and the USA.
On the occasion of the 77th anniversary of the end of the World War in Europe, the visitors almost literally turned the door handle. On Sunday, the US President’s wife Jill Biden, Bundestag President Bärbel Bas, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and U2 musicians Bono and The Edge, among others, visited Ukraine.
Visits of prominent political figures to Ukraine send an important signal
Of course, President Zelenskyy is also aware of the great symbolic power of international celebrities in his country. “Today in Ukraine has shown that we are already a full part of the free world and a united Europe,” Zelenskyy said in his daily video address on Sunday evening. “This is an obvious contrast to Moscow’s loneliness in evil and hatred, which everyone will see tomorrow,” he said, referring to Monday’s Russian military parade.
But it’s not just about symbolic politics and shaking hands. Many of the guests from abroad bring valuable military gifts and also offer much-needed humanitarian aid. The most important international visitor to date has come from the United States. US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin pledged not only their country’s full support to Ukraine, but also a further US$300 million in military aid.
