Hundreds of thousands of dead, millions of refugees: Despite this terrible reality, the war in Syria is in danger of being forgotten. A donor conference is intended to alleviate the suffering of the Syrians.
UN Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini warns against forgetting those suffering from the ongoing conflict in Syria.
“It is time to ensure that Syria and the Palestinian refugees do not become the new forgotten conflict,” he said on Tuesday at the start of an international donor conference on Syria in Brussels. The international community wants to discuss the situation in Syria, reaffirm political commitments and mobilize financial support.
“People in Syria have been suffering from the war for eleven years – 500,000 have died,” said German Minister of State Tobias Lindner. More than 15 million Syrians are dependent on humanitarian aid, and a political solution to this conflict is urgently needed, said the Green politician. The federal government will make a “substantial contribution” for humanitarian aid on Tuesday.
Last week, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said with regard to the Ukraine war: “Despite a war on our own doorstep, the European Union does not forget other conflicts.” Olivér Várhelyi, EU Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement, stressed that the Russian attack on Ukraine has further aggravated the already dire humanitarian situation in Syria and the region. The reason is, among other things, increased prices for food and raw materials.
