The increase in politically motivated crime is probably closely related to the corona pandemic. The authorities are often unable to attribute any political direction to the perpetrators.
The number of politically motivated crimes increased even more significantly in the past year than previously known.
As can be seen from the statistics published on Tuesday by the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) for 2021, 55,048 crimes with a political background were counted in Germany over the course of the year. That was a good 23 percent more than in the previous year.
The rise in crimes that the police did not assign to a specific ideology was the largest, with an increase of more than 147 percent. According to the information, 21,339 crimes were committed by suspects who were not classified as right-wing, left-wing, Islamists or supporters of a foreign ideology.
Corona pandemic as the main reason?
Among other things, experts see a connection here with the protests against the government measures to contain the corona pandemic. It is fitting that the number of criminal offenses against the state and its representatives has once again increased sharply in the past year. The police have registered more than 14,000 criminal offenses here – an increase of almost 51 percent. Almost three quarters of the offenses directed against public officials or elected officials concerned suspects who the police could not ideologically assign to any particular ideology.
Overall, according to the BKA, most crimes were committed by right-wing perpetrators. The police counted almost 22,000 criminal offenses here – a decrease of almost seven percent. Around 10,000 criminal offenses were assigned to leftists – here too it was around 7.8 percent fewer than in the previous year. The fact that more crimes with a political background were committed last year than in the past 20 years had already become known in January through a parliamentary inquiry.
