Finances: Lindner presents new tax estimate

Finances: Lindner presents new tax estimate

The forecast comes at a time of great economic uncertainty. Nevertheless, considerable additional income is expected. Last but not least, there is a reason for this.

Federal Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP) is presenting the results of the spring tax estimate today. Significant additional income is expected for the federal, state and local governments.

According to the submission by the Ministry of Finance for the working group on tax estimates, additional income of 232 billion euros is expected by 2026 compared to the estimate from last November. In 2025, revenue could exceed the one trillion euro mark for the first time, as reported by the “Handelsblatt”.

The state benefits not least from the high inflation. When goods become more expensive, the revenue from the taxes that are payable on them also increases.

Holznagel: “The state should not be a profiteer from inflation”

The President of the Association of Taxpayers, Reiner Holznagel, warned in the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung”: “It would be fair if the traffic light bases its new tax relief law on a fundamentally reformed income tax rate: it would be necessary to consider a realistic inflation forecast for this year “, he said. “In addition, not only the basic allowance, but also all other basic tariff values would have to be raised so that the cold progression is completely eliminated.”

Holznagel said the state would take in €12 billion more this year if tax rates weren’t adjusted for inflation. “The taxpayers pay these twelve billion euros too much. But the state should not be a profiteer from inflation.”

The financial and budgetary spokesman for the CSU state group in the Bundestag, Sebastian Brehm, told the “Augsburger Allgemeine” that the development of income from the federal, state and local governments shows that sufficient funds are available to return to a black zero policy. “But that will only succeed if Lindner no longer sees itself as a mere fundraiser for red-green-yellow packages, but faces the actual challenges.”

The forecast comes at a time of great economic uncertainty. The consequences of the corona pandemic in Germany have not yet been overcome. A new wave of infections could also follow in autumn. The week-long lockdown in Chinese metropolises such as Shanghai could have a significant impact on the global economy. The further development of the war in Ukraine is also not calculable.
