US: Baby food shortages: Biden steps in

Possibly because of bacterial contamination, two infants died in the United States – the producer recalled several product lines. Now many parents are desperate for replacements.

Due to dramatic bottlenecks in infant formula in the USA, US President Joe Biden has intervened to ensure the supply.

Biden has instructed the government “to urgently ensure that infant formula is safe and available to families across the country,” said his spokeswoman Jen Psaki. The President spoke to manufacturers and retail chains. The White House announced that additional infant formula should be imported from abroad. The authorities are also called upon to take action against usury.

The background to the bottlenecks is the failure of a factory belonging to the largest manufacturer of infant formula in the USA. The producer had recalled several product lines after four infants became ill and two died, possibly due to bacterial contamination.

Psaki said the factory’s closure was necessary “to save babies’ lives.” Regarding the desperate search of many parents for infant formula, a senior US government official said: “We are well aware of the frustration of parents and families.”
