The state elections in North Rhine-Westphalia started on Sunday with the best weather. In the most populous federal state, a head-to-head race is emerging between the incumbent CDU Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst and his challenger, the SPD’s top candidate Thomas Kutschaty. In several surveys, the CDU was only just ahead of the SPD with 28 to 29 percent with around 30 to 32 percent.
The sun attracted many people to the ballot box early on. According to the state returning officer, almost 36 percent of those entitled to vote had already cast their votes by 12 noon. Nevertheless, shortly before the polling stations closed, there were indications that the turnout was slightly lower than in the last election in 2017.
