North Rhine-Westphalia state elections: This is how politicians in Düsseldorf and Berlin are reacting

The CDU gains, the SPD falls, the Greens celebrate a record – the state elections in North Rhine-Westphalia cause joy and sad faces. The reactions at a glance

Evening of decision in North Rhine-Westphalia: The CDU was able to improve on its result from 2017 in the state elections on the Rhine and Ruhr and is the strongest force. The SPD has collapsed, but the Greens can be happy: they achieved a record result in NRW, while the FDP initially had to tremble about entering the Düsseldorf state parliament. The AfD manages to get into parliament again, but the left again does not. It is initially unclear who will be the government in NRW in the next five years.

Politicians in Berlin and Düsseldorf comment on the outcome of the election. An overview:

Reactions to state elections in NRW

top candidate Thomas Kuchaty admitted that the SPD missed its electoral goal of becoming the strongest party in the state elections in North Rhine-Westphalia. “We wanted to be the strongest party. We didn’t succeed,” said Kuchaty. Unfortunately, the result is not as high as the NRW-SPD had imagined. But the goal of the black-yellow coalition no longer having a majority has been achieved.

SPD General Secretary Kevin Kuehnert has called for talks about a coalition with the Greens, despite the weak performance forecast for his party in the state elections in North Rhine-Westphalia. “Black and yellow has been deselected,” said Kühnert on ARD about the previous state government made up of CDU and FDP. There are now several ways to form a new government – with a “certain probability” also under the SPD’s top candidate Thomas Kutschaty.

Federal Minister of Health Karl Lauterbach (SPD) spoke of an “unpleasant” result for his party after the state elections in North Rhine-Westphalia. He advocated that the CDU and the Greens first explore a possible government alliance. “We lost this election. The Union and the Greens won, so they have to hold the talks first. Everything else comes afterwards,” said the minister on ARD. First, the election winners would have to negotiate with each other.

Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia Hendrik Wust sees the CDU as the clear winner of the state elections in North Rhine-Westphalia and wants to lead the next government. “The CDU in North Rhine-Westphalia clearly won this election,” said Wüst on Sunday evening. “The people have clearly made us the strongest force. That is the mandate to form and lead a future government.”

CDU boss Friedrich Merz In view of the strong result in the state elections in North Rhine-Westphalia, sees his party’s course confirmed at the federal level. “This #NRW state election was also a federal political mood test,” wrote the Christian Democrat on Twitter. “The @CDU is back, our forward course has been confirmed.”

Union faction vice Jens Spahn sees the CDU and the Greens as clear winners in the state elections in North Rhine-Westphalia. The SPD, on the other hand, had a historically bad result, said Spahn on ARD. “I think that will be the starting point for the talks in the next few days.” Anyone who makes government claims with such a result “cannot be helped,” said Spahn in the direction of the SPD. With a view to his party’s strong performance, Spahn said: “The result is better than expected.”

The deputy CDU chairman Karen Prien sees a clear government mandate for the CDU in the result of the state elections in North Rhine-Westphalia. “The CDU is clearly the strongest force, which clearly goes hand in hand with a government mandate for the CDU,” she said on ZDF after the forecasts were published.

The Political Director of the Federal Greens, Emily Buening, celebrated her party’s success in the state elections in North Rhine-Westphalia. “What a success – one week after the historically best election result in Schleswig-Holstein, now also in the most populous state of North Rhine-Westphalia,” wrote Büning on Twitter. “It shows that people want us Greens to govern.”

Green leader Ricardo Lang has formulated conditions for future government participation after her party made significant gains in the state elections in North Rhine-Westphalia. She did not want to commit to a possible coalition on ZDF. “That depends solely on one thing. And that is who is convincingly willing to join us on the path to a climate-neutral and digital future, to create more social justice and to strengthen cohesion in NRW,” said Lang.

FDP Federal Vice John Vogel regretted his party’s poor performance in the elections in North Rhine-Westphalia. “It’s a heavy defeat – and it hurts,” he said on Sunday evening on ARD. The election result is something “that really hurts”. Vogel did not want to assign blame. The party now wants to look at the result “internally in peace”. “You win as a team and you lose as a team.”

The FDP defense politician Marie Agnes Strack Zimmermann was appalled by her party’s poor performance in the state elections in North Rhine-Westphalia. “It’s a really horrible evening,” said Strack-Zimmermann on ARD. The party got a “very bad result” in the West.

The FDP politician Alexander Graf Lambsdorff sees the state elections in North Rhine-Westphalia as a heavy defeat for his party. As in Schleswig-Holstein, there was a highly personalized election campaign between the top candidates, said the party’s parliamentary group leader in the Bundestag on ZDF. It is still too early to assess possible government coalitions. Lambsdorff: “Of course we will also talk to the other parties at some point. But of course it’s a defeat for the time being and for many of our fellow MPs it’s the end of their parliamentary careers.”

The AfD chairman Tino Chrupalla has shown confidence that the party will continue to be represented in the state parliament in the future, despite the forecasts for the state elections in North Rhine-Westphalia. “Of course, these results do not make us completely satisfied,” admitted Chrupalla on ZDF.

The party leader of the left, Janine wissler, was very disappointed after the state elections in North Rhine-Westphalia. “The party is currently in a difficult situation,” she said on ZDF after the publication of the first projection.
