STORY: The pumps in the small Ukrainian town of Demydow run around the clock. Flooding has been making everyday life difficult for the residents for months. Where roads and paths end in water, they need inflatable boats to get around. Only a few meadows and fields can be cultivated. Nevertheless, the people of Demydow are in a way happy about the water masses. The flooding was intentional. And the swamp that formed here on the banks of the Irpin River slowed down the Russian troops on their advance towards Kyiv. Maybe he even stopped them, local resident Volodymyr Artemchuk believes. “Of course it’s good that we were flooded. You can imagine what it would be like if they had crossed the river here and advanced on Kyiv. Kyiv would have defended itself, so all shells would have landed here. But because they here couldn’t translate, they went towards Hostomel, Vorzel and Bucha. That’s where they committed all the misery.” Ukrainians opened a dam at the beginning of the war, the Irpin flooded the village and thousands of fields in the area. Tanks could no longer get through the mud. The water level has dropped since then, but Demydow will have to keep pumping for a while. The kids are already making the best of it.
