After the good performance of the Greens in North Rhine-Westphalia, nobody can avoid Mona Neubaur in possible coalitions. The 44-year-old does not tend to flattery – two points are non-negotiable for her.
Born in Bavaria, Mona Neubaur lost her heart to North Rhine-Westphalia many years ago – and to Düsseldorf mustard. The hot spice suits the Green front woman, who stands for clear edges and does not tend to flatter others.
NRW Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst (CDU) also felt this in the TV speech competition of the top candidates in the state election campaign. There, the eloquent 44-year-old graduate teacher countered his comments soberly, briefly, sometimes pointedly and without any fake smile.
The tripling of the Greens’ votes in the state elections to 18.2 percent catapulted their top candidate, Neubaur, into the role of “kingmaker” overnight. The politician, who is also valued by many across the party for her professionalism, could bring both Wüst and his challenger Thomas Kutschaty (SPD) to power in the event of a traffic light alliance in the new legislative period.
Neubaur wants NRW to remain an industrial state
The news magazine “Spiegel” has already named her “Queen Green”. She herself states with satisfaction: “We have achieved the election goal that no government can be formed without us.” The experienced political strategist has already announced “tough negotiations”, but does not let the cards look into which alliance she wants to steer her clearly left-wing national association.
Neubaur came to the Greens through her work at an alternative energy supplier. She joined the party in 2005 and was initially active in Düsseldorf until she was elected state chairman in 2014. In this state election, she did not succeed in winning her constituency in Düsseldorf.
In her own words, she appreciates the “diversity of regions, origins, football clubs, breweries and customs” about her adopted country. She wants NRW to remain an industrial country, “but driven by renewable energies and clean technologies”.
For her, the “human task of climate protection” and more social justice are non-negotiable in coalition negotiations.
