Austria’s Federal President Van der Bellen has been in office since 2016. Now he wants to run again. Only one party wants to field an opposing candidate.
Austria’s Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen is running for a second term. The 78-year-old politician announced on Sunday that he would stand for re-election in the fall.
Europe is experiencing turbulent times due to the pandemic, war and climate crisis, the former Greens leader wrote in an online message. “I would therefore like to continue to put my experience at the service of our country and, to the best of my knowledge and belief, contribute to ensuring that Austria has a good future.” The election date has not yet been set.
FPÖ has not yet presented an opposing candidate
The conservative chancellor party ÖVP and most of the opposition parties have signaled that they will not field any opposing candidates. Only the FPÖ plans to run against the economist – but the right-wing party has not yet presented a candidate.
At the end of 2016, after a turbulent election process, Van der Bellen finally prevailed against the FPÖ candidate Norbert Hofer with 53.8 percent of the votes. The runoff was repeated because of formal irregularities, and the rerun date was postponed because of defective ballot envelopes.
