The CDU foreign policy expert Roderich Kiesewetter has massively denounced the course taken by the federal government in supplying heavy weapons to Ukraine, which is being attacked by Russia.
He accused Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) of hesitation and playing for time. CDU leader Friedrich Merz had previously sharply criticized the government. Siemtje Möller (SPD), State Secretary in the Defense Ministry, justified the government course.
Kiesewetter said on the ARD talk show “Anne Will”: “German industry made it clear on February 28 that they could very quickly train around 100 leopards and around 100 martens.” To date, however, there has been no order. When asked why the chancellor didn’t do this, Kiesewetter said: “I think he’s playing for time.”
The CDU politician added: “The longer this war lasts and we don’t deliver, the more difficult it will be for Ukraine. All the louder are the words after a ceasefire, that is, a freeze on Russian profits.” Kiesewetter continued: “I fear that the Federal Chancellor does not want Ukraine to win this war. Wins in the sense that the Russian troops are driven out of the country.”
Opposition accuses government of hesitation
Merz had previously said on the ZDF program “Berlin direct” that Germany had not yet delivered any heavy weapons.” Others have been doing more for a long time. “If everyone behaved like the Federal Republic of Germany, the Russian army would have taken Kyiv long ago.”
The opposition and representatives of Ukraine have repeatedly accused the German government of being hesitant to deliver heavy weapons. Former NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen called for German leadership at the weekend. Chancellor Scholz had repeatedly rejected allegations of hesitancy, referred to the support provided so far and rejected “hasty action”. Scholz is currently on a trip to Africa.
Industry wants to deliver anti-aircraft tanks
State Secretary Möller said at “Berlin direct” about arms deliveries that it was recorded within NATO “that no armored personnel carriers or battle tanks of Western models were delivered. And so far there has been no change in the position of all Western nations.” The Marder is an armored personnel carrier, the Leopard is a main battle tank.
The German arms industry wants to supply Ukraine with the approval of the federal government in July a low double-digit number of Cheetah anti-aircraft tanks. Kiesewetter said that Ukraine was happy about the cheetah, but didn’t want it, “because they don’t need it from the point of view of the matter. They need martens and they need main battle tanks.”
