Illegal crossings: Belarus closes the border

“As of today, nobody is allowed to cross the border, from either side, from the south or the west,” said ruler Alexander Lukashenko on Thursday. The EU accuses Belarus of deliberately sending refugees across its border towards the EU.

The European External Action Service also summoned the Belarusian business owner to Brussels because of the refugee conflict. As a spokeswoman for the EU Commission announced on Thursday, it was against the “instrumentalization” of refugees by Minsk.

In the past, Lukashenko has openly threatened to allow people from countries such as Iraq, Afghanistan or Syria to cross the border in response to the EU sanctions imposed on his country. In the past few weeks, for example, the EU border protection agency Frontex has sent additional staff to Lithuania to prevent illegal border crossings.
