Russian diplomat resigns in protest at Ukraine invasion

A Russian diplomat at the UN mission in Geneva has resigned over the war in Ukraine. In his justification, the diplomat describes a corrupt and sick system that would kill anyone.

Opposition to the war in Ukraine does not seem to be particularly strong in Russian society or in the government apparatus, but sometimes someone breaks the loud silence. A Russian diplomat at the UN headquarters in Geneva has now resigned in protest against the invasion. In the 20 years of his diplomatic career, he was “never as ashamed of my country as he was on February 24 this year,” Boris Bondarev wrote in his resignation letter that was published on Monday, referring to the start of Russia’s war of aggression three months ago.

Bondarev described the invasion of the neighboring country as “a crime not only against the Ukrainian people, but also perhaps the most serious crime against the Russian people”. The letter “Z” – symbol of support for aggressive war – thwarts “all hopes and prospects for a prosperous free society in our country”.

Diplomat cites Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov as an example of disintegration

Bondarev accused the perpetrators of the war of nothing more than “staying in power forever”. More specifically, he accused the Russian elite of “living in pompous, tacky palaces, sailing yachts with the maintenance and tonnage to match the Russian Navy, enjoying unlimited power and complete impunity. To achieve that, they are willing to do so sacrificing as many lives as necessary. Thousands of Russians and Ukrainians have already died just for that.”

Bondarev cites Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, his boss, as an example of the decline in Russian politics. Lavrov has “developed within 18 years from a professional and educated intellectual to a person who (…) threatens the world with nuclear weapons.” The Foreign Ministry is only engaged in “warmongering, lies and hatred,” writes Bondarew.

Ukraine war: appeal to Russian diplomats

His letter was sent to several diplomatic missions in Geneva and was seen by the AFP news agency. In it, Bondarev declared his resignation not only from his post in Geneva, but from his country’s entire diplomatic service.

Hillel Neuer from the non-governmental organization UN Watch appealed to all other Russian diplomats to follow Bondarev’s “moral example” and also to resign.
