Probably more than 90 people died in India recently due to the enormous heat. The country already registers ground temperatures of up to 60 degrees in May.
Federal Agriculture Minister Cem Özdemir sees the heat wave currently prevailing in India as a reminder for more climate protection.
«60 degrees ground temperature, people gathering under bridges to cool off. These are apocalyptic conditions, »said the Green politician on Tuesday in Brussels. He advises looking at the situation in India with a view to more climate protection. The situation cannot be ignored. “I mean, you have to be ignorant to hide that,” said Özdemir.
At least 90 people have died in India and Pakistan in recent weeks due to the heat. Millions of people have been suffering from the high temperatures since April. While such heat is generally not uncommon in South Asia, it hit the region much earlier than usual this year.
