Events: After demands for resignation: Frankfurt Mayor wants to comment

Charges have been brought against Frankfurt’s Lord Mayor due to a reasonable suspicion of accepting an advantage. Now Peter Feldmann has also attracted negative attention.

After the recent controversial behavior of Frankfurt’s Lord Mayor Peter Feldmann, he announced a statement.

The SPD politician will speak to the press on Wednesday morning, it said. The 63-year-old is accused of corruption in connection with the so-called Awo affair and had also attracted attention in the past few days due to other incidents. On Monday, his own party had asked Feldmann to resign from office. The Greens, CDU, FDP and Volt had previously spoken out in favor of resigning.

At the weekend, a video appeared on the Internet in which Feldmann spoke of flight attendants on the flight to the Europa League final in Seville, “who put me out of action hormonally at first”.

Last Thursday, the mayor had also caused irritation at the cup celebration. There he first took the trophy out of the hands of Eintracht Frankfurt captain Sebastian Rode and coach Oliver Glasner in order to take the lead. During his speech, the mayor, who describes himself as a Eintracht fan, mispronounced several of the players’ names. Feldmann himself regretted his appearance at the party, and he later apologized for his sentence on the plane.

In March, the Frankfurt public prosecutor’s office brought charges based on reasonable suspicion of accepting an advantage. Feldmann’s wife is said to have received a salary in excess of the collective agreement as the head of an Awo-Kita “without any objective reason”, as it was said. In addition, the Arbeiterwohlfahrt (Awo) supported Feldmann in the 2018 election campaign by raising donations. In return, he wanted to “benevolently consider” the interests of Awo Frankfurt.
