Stephan Weil: How the Lower Saxony of the SPD wants to save the election year

Lower Saxony’s Stephan Weil is not considered a fan of the chancellor – but the two will win or lose together this year.

“Moin,” Stephan Weil calls out early in the morning and squeezes into the corner of a leather armchair. So this is the man who is supposed to save the honor of the SPD? “That would be far exaggerated,” says Lower Saxony’s Prime Minister. The state elections at the beginning of October are not that important for the venerable SPD. But it is the next and last opportunity this year to show that Olaf Scholz’s victory was more than a pause in the long decline of social democracy.

Weil is aware of the challenge. He wants to “achieve a balance” for the SPD, he says: two badly lost elections in Schleswig-Holstein and North Rhine-Westphalia – and only one won in the small Saarland. Now he comes.
