Fleeing from the Donbass: More and more people are trying to escape the Russian attacks in eastern Ukraine. These have been particularly intense lately. Only a few trains and buses run from the city of Sloviansk to safer regions. One who escaped in an evacuation transport on Monday is Vira Safronova. She says she lost everything. O-TON VIRA SAFRONOVA “On April 29th I left my house and about 2-3 days later my neighbors called me and said: ‘Vira, that’s it, your house is gone, it burned down completely.” Some residents of the city cannot or do not want to flee. Halyna stays in the market place, she sells fruit and vegetables here. O-TON HALYNA “My husband only has one leg… I walk on crutches, we have severe disabilities. I also have three children – I help them out with the sales.” Other stallholders say their job helps them take their mind off the situation, at least a little. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Tuesday that the situation in Donbass was “extremely difficult”. Russia is attacking the cities of Sloviansk and Sievjerodonetsk, but Ukrainian forces have so far repelled the advance. Moscow now controls around 90% of Luhansk, Ukraine’s easternmost region.
